Types of Financial Aid

Scholarships

Scholarships are free money for college that you don’t have to pay back! They’re typically awarded based on merit, skills, unique characteristics, or financial need. Many organizations, including I Know I Can, offer scholarships—be sure to apply early and often. Completing the FAFSA is required for many scholarship opportunities, so don’t miss this important step.

Grants

Grants are also funds that you don’t need to repay. They are often awarded based on financial need and come from federal and state governments, colleges, and private organizations. Completing the FAFSA is the first step in determining your eligibility for many grants.

Work-Study

The Federal Work-Study Program provides part-time jobs for students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay for educational expenses. Work-study positions are often on campus and can give you valuable work experience while helping cover your costs.

Loans

Loans are borrowed money that you must repay with interest. Federal student loans often offer lower interest rates and more flexible repayment plans than private loans. Make sure you understand the terms of your loan before accepting it.
