The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) helps determine how much financial aid you may be eligible to receive to help pay for your education after high school. By completing the FAFSA, you may qualify for grants (money you don’t have to repay), scholarships, work-study opportunities, and federal student loans.
The FAFSA isn’t just for students attending four-year colleges—it can also provide financial aid for eligible community colleges, career schools, trade schools, and vocational programs. Many scholarship programs also require a completed FAFSA, so it’s important to submit yours as early as possible.
The FAFSA application opens every October, so be sure to complete it as soon as possible to maximize your financial aid opportunities.
Need help? Our advisors can guide you through the process during one-on-one appointments or FAFSA workshops.
Winter: Keep the Momentum Going

Don’t stop applying for scholarships after you’ve submitted your college applications. Many scholarships have deadlines during the winter and spring, and every award can help lower the cost of your education.
Scholarships can help reduce your out-of-pocket costs for tuition, books, housing, and other educational expenses. Even smaller awards can add up, so don’t overlook an opportunity because of the award amount.
Set aside time to search for new opportunities, keep track of deadlines, and submit applications. Check out our scholarship resource library, or meet with your I Know I Can advisor who can help you identify scholarships that match your interests, experiences, and future goals.
